The main advantage is that you don't have to use paper filters which can be a messy business. This Krups Gold Tone Filter is today's version of the expensive gold filter I bought, way back in the mid-1980's, with my Krups coffeemaker that I have back in my winter home. This new one doesn't fit the filter basket perfectly but does the job just fine. And, the side benefits of saving money on filters and not using more paper are a plus too. I highly recommend that if you are investing in the quality coffeemaker that Krups makes, you spend the few extra for this filter.
I love this filter. Just empty, wash, and REUSE. A small place to start for "going green." A little worried about the handle, seems a little flimsy-not a deal breaker though.
In particular, unlike every other coffee maker I have ever used, there is a top piece immediately above the coffee pot that must be swung fully to the left or no coffee will be brewed. I used to buy Cuisinart coffee makers, which did a good job but didn't last very long before malfunctioning and needing replacement. I like this coffee maker very much because it grinds and makes coffee. There is a lever that swings this top piece out. I haven't had the Krups coffee long enough to know whether it will prove more durable than the Cuisinart but I am hopeful that it will be as it looks very well made.Pro's: makes excellent coffee and appears to be solidly built. Has all the functions one would expect in a high end coffee makerCon's: the instructions that come with the coffee could be better written. Then, when the coffee makers starts, this top piece automatically returns to the position where most users will probably think it should have been all along. A few reviews make reference to the importance of reading the manual carefully, but none refer specifically to this odd feature of how the coffee maker is operated.
Krups 049-33 Gold Tone FilterA gold filter is a gold filter - they're all good, but I like the Krups filter better because it's deeper, which makes cleaning and handling easier than many others. Part of the entire Krups 10-cup-carafe coffee maker, which is an excellent product.
This has changed the way I make coffee now. One its reusable so its GREEN. And two it makes way better coffee than those paper filters hands down. Everyone should have this.
